Reflections on a Lily Pond
I’ve been on one of my painting journeys over the last few weeks, revisiting Sparkle and Shine, a landscape (pondscape?) from 2013.
WIP #1 I started with black canvases and used intense colours for the underpainting because I wanted the lily pads to really stand out against the blue-black water.
WIP #2 Then I painted green over the pink and yellow over the purple. Lighter blue ‘sparkle’ shapes were introduced to the water.
WIP #3 The final stage included adding touches of pink for the highlights.
I’m going to wait a week or so for them to dry properly, varnish them (because I think reflections should be glossy and I want the water to look deliciously dark and deep), and then these four new paintings will be available on Etsy.
Reflecting on The Colour of Snow

Now framed, ‘The High Country’ will be making its debut at this year’s Pegasus Bay Art Show (Waimakariri, NZ). Artworks from 78 local artists will be exhibited and available for purchase. There will also be an art display by the children of Pegasus Bay School which I am very much looking forward to seeing. The art show runs from 21st – 23rd September.

Supermoon at Twilight
‘Supermoon at Twilight’ is a revisiting of my study of a supermoon over Moorhouse Ave, Christchurch, in 2013. The new version was painted on a black canvas (of course!). The work-in-progress images (below) show i) work on the composition (mainly tweaking the city silhouette) and ii) changes to the underpainting colours prior to adding the final layers. Go, moon, go!
The High Country
If you’ve ever been through Springfield on your way to the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, you would have seen this view of Mt Torlesse, Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park. It is one of my favourite parts of the country. It’s also a landscape that I painted in 2014 which you can see here. I found it interesting comparing the two paintings ~ four years has gone by in my art journey and I hope I’ve learnt a thing or two along the way.
‘The High Country’ is the first of a number of landscapes that I’ve decided to revisit and paint again, this time as part of my ‘black canvas experiment’.
And I’m not going to get tired of painting on black canvas any time soon.
