My solo exhibition is now all set up and I’m thrilled with how it looks in the gallery space. You can see a video walk through on my Facebook page.
I’ve called the exhibition ‘Diary of an Optimist’ because my paintings are like a diary — the view from a window, memories of a holiday, the words of a poem or a song — real and imagined landscapes celebrating the beauty of everyday places.

There are several paintings that have never been out of the studio before… so that’s exciting too. The exhibition is on until the last Sunday in August at The Bridge Hub Gallery, 51 Bridge Street, South New Brighton, Christchurch.
‘Spring Snow’ acrylic on canvas, 155 x 155 mm, 2023. Available.
Here’s another small offering ready just in time for my solo exhibition at The Bridge Hub Gallery. ‘Spring Snow’ is a very textured study of snowflakes (the flowers) in Hagley Park. We still have another month before it’s officially spring here in New Zealand but these hardy little bulbs always show up early.
The exhibition ‘Diary of an Optimist’ 🙂 will start tomorrow and run until the last Sunday in August at The Bridge Hub, 51 Bridge Street, South New Brighton, Christchurch.
‘Outlook for Thursday’ acrylic on canvas, 205 x 205 mm, 2023. SOLD
Here’s another new painting that will be part of the exhibition I’m having in August. If you’re curious about the title of the painting, it’s from a classic Kiwi song from the 1980s by DD Smash. I love the song ~ and although I’m not a fan of the video, here it is anyway…
“…the outlook for Thursday Your guess is good as mine We’ll be together Yeah, together by design Sunshine…”

There will be more than a dozen paintings ~ big and small ~ in my solo exhibition and all will be available to purchase. It will run from 5th-27th August at The Gallery, The Bridge Hub, 51 Bridge Street, South New Brighton, Christchurch (NZ).
‘Chasing Reflections’ acrylic on canvas, 305 x 305 mm, 2023. Available.
…and it feels really good. I’ve just finished this little painting of New Brighton Pier, I have another small painting I’m hoping to complete this week, and I’ve started a series of three landscapes inspired by Port Chalmers that are progressing nicely. My renewed enthusiasm definitely has a little something to do with a solo exhibition I’m having in August. By happy coincidence (I did not plan it), the pier just happens to be around the corner from the gallery : ) The photograph of ‘Chasing Reflections’ is not the best and it’s too late to take a better one now that I’ve started varnishing it (see photo below), so it’s a good thing that it will be in the exhibition because it looks so much better in person.
I first painted New Brighton Pier in 2014 and I wanted to revisit it and concentrate on the reflections. The painting underneath gives it an interesting texture (yes, I painted over an older work but don’t worry ~ it was nothing important) and the varnish makes the shadows deeper.
‘Chasing Reflections’ texture detail with added shine
So if you’re in Christchurch in August, please call in and have a look. There will be more than a dozen paintings ~ big and small ~ in the exhibition and all will be available to purchase. It will run from 5th-27th August at The Gallery, The Bridge Hub, 51 Bridge Street, South New Brighton, Christchurch (NZ).
Snowy mountain art brooch, approx. 2 x 2.5 inches, 2022.
This snowy New Zealand mountain scene was my last painting for 2022. It is also an art brooch and THE smallest painting I’ve ever tackled. I was commissioned to paint it last month as a Christmas present. The artist and the recipient are both very happy with the result.
