What a wonderful gift

The best bag ever — was made for me by Sandra (bagirl)…

…looks great front and back…

Sadly, I do not have my family’s sewing gene. I can draw and paint and knit and cross-stitch… but I can’t sew. How wonderful, then, to have a friend who can! We have a lot of fun rummaging through her fabulous fabric stash and coming up with all manner of unique creations.

This bag was Sandra’s way of thanking me for helping with her blog (I’m photographer-in-chief ― I also designed her business cards/product labels). I chose the fabric as well as the bag design. Long live the barter system : )

Anna Cull Work in progress

Here is a little something I’ve been experimenting with as a way of making use of an old (vintage 1970s), much loved and sadly threadbare tea towel.

Work in progress #1 – using gel medium as a glue, I covered a piece of artboard with the teatowel to make a linen canvas
Work in progress #1 – using gel medium as a glue, I made a linen canvas by covering an artboard with the tea towel (I have enough fabric left over to make another canvas)
Work in progress #2 – I began painting with acrylics thinned with polymer medium and used a photo of myself as a child for reference

Work in progress#3 – I continued to build up the layers with thicker, more opaque acrylics to unify the different elements

I’ll post the finished painting tomorrow.

Shoot it, Sketch it: Little angel

Anna Cull Little Angel

The little angel on the top of our Christmas tree inspired this week’s Shoot it, Sketch it (yes, it’s a fake tree — I’m allergic to the pine variety). I knitted her years ago using one of Jean Greenhowe’s wonderful patterns — she was a fairy in the pattern book but I turned her into an angel by making a halo instead of a bow. She’s about 100 mm tall.

Others participating in Shoot it, Sketch it are Clouds of ColourThe Little LeafLunch Sketch and Poppytump.

Happy Christmas, everyone : )

A model mouse

Pirate Mouse model — plasticine and wire, 75 mm tall, 2012.

I made this quirky little fellow when I was designing the Pirate Mouse character. He helped me to figure a few things out, such as how to draw a mouse in pants and a waistcoat without losing his essential mousiness.

A fun, three-day project.

I have always loved the Spanish Mission style architecture of New Regent Street. The pastel green, yellow and blue façades are like the icing on the cake of central Christchurch. The street was opened on 1st April 1932. Happy 80th birthday, New Regent Street.

The street suffered some damage during Canterbury’s recent earthquakes but has survived remarkably well. It is, however, in the city’s no-go Red Zone. There are plans to restore the street and to try and reopen it by Christmas 2012.
