Has anyone noticed that all the stamp illustrations are shaped like old TV sets?

The Land of the Giants (1968-1970): Set in the future (1983), the crew and passengers of a sub-orbital commercial flight from New York to London encounter a strange space storm and crash-land on a mysterious Earth-like planet where everything is 12 x normal size.

The Time Tunnel

Time travel at its grooviest. If you don’t believe me, track down the pilot episode.

The Time Tunnel (1966-1967): This series follows the adventures of two scientists who become trapped in a top-secret U.S. government time machine, the Time Tunnel. The machine malfunctions, sending the time travellers to a new location in time and space every week.

The Invaders

One of the best things about this project was getting to draw all the titles. Every single one of them is deliciously quirky but The Invaders’ title font is a work of art.

The Invaders (1967-1968): Architect David Vincent happens upon an alien invasion and spends 43 episodes spanning two series trying to convince others that Earth is under threat.

Star Trek

Star Trek (1966-1969): The original series of 79 episodes has become a cult classic. “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Numerous movies and spin-off series have followed, including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise.

My all-time favourite episode is The Trouble with Tribbles. I’m quite enjoying the movie prequels too.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner (1968-1969): The prisoner is a former British spy who, having abruptly resigned from the secret service, has been abducted and imprisoned in a strange village…and he has no idea who his captors are. “I am not a number, I am a free man” was the catchphrase of the series. The stamp depicts the prisoner being apprehended by a large, white, mysterious bouncing bubble called ‘Rover’.

Those bouncing bubbles used to give me nightmares!

The Jetsons

The Jetsons (1962-1963): Hanna-Barbera’s animated sitcom about an American family living in the year 2062 featured flying cars, floating cities and a robot named Rosey. A second series was produced in the 1980s.

Which means that we only have to wait another 49 years for flying cars!
