Today’s Shoot it, Sketch it is yet another experiment. The inspiration was a photograph taken at our back door last April. Something about the dry, curly leaves and the tiny, creamy white petals really appealed to me.

I painted it three times ― twice with brushes (above) and a third time with a palette knife (using the leftover paint for the background) and acrylic paint markers (below).

Then I combined the three paintings in Photoshop and tweaked a few filters to create the series below.

Here is the finished painting based on last week’s photo and sketch. In real life, the texture of the night sky is quite subtle and, in some lights, the surface looks smooth and the dark purple appears almost black. I wouldn’t mind painting a few more of these : )

For years I’ve been wanting to create something based on this view of Christchurch taken from the Port Hills and now I’m finally getting around to it. I made a couple of little changes to the original photo because a not-quite-full moon just seemed a little sad.
This sketch is the reference for an acrylic painting that I’ll post for next week’s Shoot it, Sketch it.

This week’s Shoot it, Sketch it painting is an abstract inspired by the reflections in the crystal clear waters of Hamurana Springs. If you’re ever anywhere near Lake Rotorua in New Zealand, this magical spot is nearby and well worth a visit. It’s the largest headspring in the North Island and is an impressive 15 metres deep (15 metres!). If you want to know more, click on this Envirohistory NZ link.
The painting is still a work in progress. I hope to have it finished next week…
