Outlook for Thursday

painting of two seagulls on a street light painted in a realistic style with lots of texture
‘Outlook for Thursday’ acrylic on canvas, 205 x 205 mm, 2023. SOLD

Here’s another new painting that will be part of the exhibition I’m having in August. If you’re curious about the title of the painting, it’s from a classic Kiwi song from the 1980s by DD Smash. I love the song ~ and although I’m not a fan of the video, here it is anyway…

“…the outlook for Thursday
Your guess is good as mine
We’ll be together
Yeah, together by design
Sunshine…”

There will be more than a dozen paintings ~ big and small ~ in my solo exhibition and all will be available to purchase. It will run from 5th-27th August at The Gallery, The Bridge Hub, 51 Bridge Street, South New Brighton, Christchurch (NZ).

Yes, I’m finally painting again…

Acrylic painting of a pier and its reflection in the waves, painted in a semi-abstract style with lots of texture.
‘Chasing Reflections’ acrylic on canvas, 305 x 305 mm, 2023. Available.

…and it feels really good. I’ve just finished this little painting of New Brighton Pier, I have another small painting I’m hoping to complete this week, and I’ve started a series of three landscapes inspired by Port Chalmers that are progressing nicely. My renewed enthusiasm definitely has a little something to do with a solo exhibition I’m having in August. By happy coincidence (I did not plan it), the pier just happens to be around the corner from the gallery : ) The photograph of ‘Chasing Reflections’ is not the best and it’s too late to take a better one now that I’ve started varnishing it (see photo below), so it’s a good thing that it will be in the exhibition because it looks so much better in person.

I first painted New Brighton Pier in 2014 and I wanted to revisit it and concentrate on the reflections. The painting underneath gives it an interesting texture (yes, I painted over an older work but don’t worry ~ it was nothing important) and the varnish makes the shadows deeper.

I’m slowly getting back into painting again : ) These mini Christchurch City moonscapes look even better now they’re varnished.

My thanks to Beth / I didn’t have my glasses on…. for making me aware of Debayan Ghosh’s moonlight quote.

The World Looks Different Today

acrylic painting of pink blossoms against a blue sky background by Anna Cull
‘The World Looks Different Today’ acrylic on canvas, 155 x 305 mm, 2021. SOLD

Hi. It has been a few months since I posted anything here and I wanted to assure you that my social media silence is nothing to be concerned about. I am still here… I have been busy writing songs. My intention was to work on music and take a short break from painting for a month or so and, in the blink on an eye, it is now September and the first day of spring!

Yesterday I finally picked up a paintbrush again and this is what happened…

Royals

acrylic painting of a monarch butterfly on white Queen Anne's Lace flowers by Anna Cull
‘Royals’ acrylic on canvas, 200 x 200 mm, 2021. SOLD

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes,
but in having new eyes.

Marcel Proust

My latest painting is a new, smaller version of a scene that I have painted once before. I find the image and the idea equally appealing ~ a monarch butterfly resting on Queen Anne’s Lace, as if by royal appointment.

Head in the Clouds

acrylic painting of a New Zealand landscape with clouds by Anna Cull
‘Head in the Clouds’ acrylic on canvas, 500 x 500 mm, 2021. Available.

Don’t ask me where this is. It’s not important. It was late summer, early in the morning. The air was damp and the mountains were obscured by low cloud. We didn’t mind; there was beauty around every corner and we weren’t in a hurry. As the clouds began to lift and catch the light, the mood began to shift and the river tumbled on as if this had been nothing extraordinary.
